The reason why there are items that "cannot be used in combat" is because they can be used outside of combat.

The problem with this game is that it relies on the player comprehending and analyzing, in real time, a system too complex for human understanding.

The gameplay mechanics and puzzle designs aren't bad, but there REALLY needs to be something to reward the player. Otherwise they have no incentive to continue playing.
