game just froze with a normal mouse and if you think about it, there's no way for the game to know what device is being used so no reason to think that's the cause
Sorry about that. I'm trying to pinpoint the exact issue. While the game doesn't technically recognize a touchpad from a mouse, my observation so far has been that sometimes using the former makes some mouse events not register, or register out of order. Clearly that's not 100% the case though. What browser are you using?
After playing for 2 days without problems, I thought all the "lost save" comments where from people doing something wrong. But now mine is lost too, not even my manual export works (I did press ctrl+a). It's like for some reason you are asking for it so here you go: 1 star and never coming back again ;)
Right click on the top left Swarm Simulator button (next to the version), and select copy link. You will get a very long link ending in "1#". Write "debug" after the link so it now ends in "1#debug". You will get a secret achievement.
