It's not clear if this is by design, but sometimes you can get stuck on the last rank with all pawns and not be able to move while still having energy. This can really crush you in the later part of the gauntlet.
Fastest way to the hard badge is probably to get the zookeeper badge by completing a bunch of animal puzzles and then playing the animal dailies. A quick animal daily with +300% experience can net you about 20k per puzzle
To the people who can't get five golden scarabs because they "over upgraded," just put the cursor all the way to the edge of the screen and wait until it completely fills with enemies. Each time you clear the screen wait until it refills again. The combos become huge and that's how you get high enough scores. Besides that, it takes some skill but deliberately missing the sun kings and picking off everything else is what it takes sometimes.
The one thing that I would add to this game is a "spend all" button that would automatically buy all the affordable upgrades to the valve flows so that I don't need to furiously mash buying 50+ levels at once. Even without it, terrific game 5/5
