I do not know if this is a pretty but mind-numbingly bland one-button game or the most brilliant satire of modern "speed bump grind" linear game designs ever made.
There are moments when I regret throwing all my cash into buying the Pig Gun rather than saving for my Meteor Gat... but then I remember that I have a cannon that shoots ANGRY PIGGIES.
Starts out promising, but quickly falls victim to the bullet-hell curse of emphasizing memorization and repetition. Once you get into the later gimmick levels, the game also slows to a crawl, with enemy defense and rp costs skyrocketing but the relative damage on weapons staying the same. Changing your loadout ends up being more of a lateral move at best, and a negative tradeoff in most cases, thus defeating making upgrades moot unless you are an adamant completionist or like collectathons.
The game didn't seem to really hit its stride terms of difficulty until about level 19, and those last ten levels jump pretty fiercely, too. Spamming flat land helps, but the AI becomes more aggressive, setting up ambushes and using the totems strategically.
If all you do up to that point is terraform and charge, it might catch you by surprise. In the end the game isn't too difficult...if you learn to use your other totems correctly.
I can easily forgive this game not having the polish of its predecessors. Some of the logic is a bit fuzzy, but overall it is still a simple puzzle game.
What kills it for me is the several layers of ads and external links on the game's UI. Again, I could give this a pass, but what kind of ending was that. "Congratulations, you're done! Episode 4 and the rest of the game is only available in the phone version!" Politely, this game has quite a bit of game in it for still being a demo.
am i... um, playing the same game as everyone else? what i'm playing is like a pretentious Use Boxmen/Chronotron mashup hung solely on the more mundane timing elements of both. what did i miss here? besides the fun, i mean.
it does say right on the intro/help screen that its based on DTD. Its got a bit more style and graphical polish, but it does need a couple features like hotkeys and global gamespeed control.
Lots of frustrating bugs, not much explanation on skills/stats, and a bit on the easy side. Still, fun and compelling game play when you get down to it, and pretty good music. Could be a great game with a little more polish.
