In the update log stands that minimum damage is 1.When i was fighting Drakhbet i had him down to 1 hp and couldn't hit more than 0 even with critical.

A nice way to get exp early on is by searching for jelly's, wait for them to split and then kill but 1 of them.Repeat to get lots of exp
