you only attack with your hero if you cast a spell or an enemy gets close enough for you to attack with some magic that doesnt cost mana and after the final wave when all the units are dead if both heroes are still alive they charge at each other and fight til the death
i got a glitch where i fled from a group of enforcers and surrender when they caught up but it was still in combat mode so i surrendered again and got fined twice
