Idle mode is offline gain, 10% means 10% of day duration while playing (4 sec while playing 40 while closed). Offline gain means auto collect of food and larva that are proportionals to queens and scouts.
There could be an achievement or at least an option to buy "offline gains" while you are not there. Not the full ammount of course, but some gains would be nice :)
