Hmm... My strategy is different. I largely ignore the population of the states and focus on creating "walls of immunity." State-to-state spread is mostly through borders and the infection cannot pass easily through states that are largely immune.

I don't know what you mean by "press the arrow." I have destroyed every monster in everey (reachable) room. I have hit every switch (there are 4 that won't stay though.)

From the description, I anticipated something that would challenge normal thinking, solving word puzzles through "nonstandard means." I was not expecting a trivia question where you stay on the same question if you have never heard of the correct answer.
No, "randomly transform" usually doesn't make red cuties. It does usually allow a "fusion" of two groups which you can use with "collect as red."
Gold on unlimited is easy. Gold on 5-level -- that's hard. I did gold on unlimited by playing conservatively and staying in play until I got enough points. (I think it was level 12 or something.)
