Level 4 is beatable on hard(I've done so 2 times), but it's still too difficult to be anything other than the final level.

I think a shop w/ upgrades is a bad idea. Visual stuff is ok, but performance upgrades are unfair. N00bs have enough difficulty keeping up with the better players and I think it is great that skill matters most in this game, not just equipment.
