In my humble opinion the core of this sort of game is choice, or the illusion of choice, or the deliberate absence of choice; usually forcing you to do something you don't really want to; with the intent of making the player think rather than do anything in particular. I think it would have worked better if you gave the option of just working, either by doing something tedious or some sort of somewhat long cut scene or something which would then restart you to the same point as the start of the game to make wandering off a player choice or if the diligent working, after several iterations, gave a different ending like getting paid and going home to a family with a little bit of colour letting people who played through both endings thinking about the consequences of the obviously good/colourful ending. If that wasn't your intent then my apologies for saying so much off base stuff it just kind of felt like what you were moving towards but didn't quite have the time to get to.
