3 endings:
Good ending: Collect no gems, do not learn Teleport from The Deep One. Climb the cliff. Dwarves at home will say they missed you, etc.
Bad ending: Collect all gems, ride light back home. Dwarves at home will treat you about the same as before.
Killer ending: Kill 10 creatures, go to The Deep One in the cave, teleport back home. Dwarves at home will fear you ask plead for you not to kill them.
Once you get a lab, try to get Radio upgrade. A bunch of random soldier events will come and you will be nearly impenetrable except by large hordes. Then just try for 3 labs, get 5 scientists (use school if necessary), and reserch Cure for Zombieism. Have EVERYONE except the scientusts on the defense, even the people like Builders and Scavengers. Because once you start researching the cure or writing a constitution, a horde comes each turn.
