Just don't reload if you don't have to, like if there's still quite a bit of ammo in the magazine don't reload... because of how the ammo system works you don't get back any ammo you still had. more realistic I guess.

When your making fleets for commanders make sure that the ships pair well with the commander and the ships weapons pair well with the commanders weapon expertise.
