If you have choice between lots of weapons (such as an AK-47, UMP, Mini-Uzi, sawed-off shotgun, hunting rifle, revolver, etc.) in my experience, use the high fire-rate weapons while giving powerful, low-ammo guns to allies since they don't shoot as often as you do.
