Made it all the way to wave 40 of level one before dying... wow, that was a waste of time.

How was that hard? This game took me about 5 minutes to beat. Just ignore upgrading the engine, and buy mostly weapon upgrades, with a few energy in the later levels, I ended with only a few deaths with about 130 weapon and 70-80 energy.
