Controls are really buggy and tend to stick. You can be on a 13-0 streak and all of the sudden you run into a pit 5 times. Also, as others have said suicides should not count against you being as they don't against the enemy.

Titandrake's strategy for the space stars badge is exactly right. It took me about a half hour start to finish to get all badges thanks to his advise.
