At the moment, other than in the pure numbers of my e.g. population/science, I cannot see what difference any of my choices make. I can still gather resources and build all the different projects etc. It would be good to see some variation based on my choices, for example limit the projects to people with a certain amount of e.g. science, so that those who chose more science heavy projects earlier will reach them sooner.
Generally speaking the biggest difference between stats comes down to how active/idle you play. Military/Diplomacy are most active, then science/unity, then commerce, and tradition/ culture/population are the most idle. Although like with most idles/simulation games there doesn't tend to be really distinct strategies, which would be more in a strategy game like Civilization. I think this game has more decision points/strategies than lots of idles out there, some of which have literally none (you're just solving the one most efficient way to get money). But a more involved survival game mode is planned, which will make stats more diverse in effects :).
