Thanks for your feedback! For now, you can change the setting to "MAX" and it'll only buy up to the next milestone. I'm already working on an improved feature that will let you explicitly indicate that you want to buy only to the next milestone and not more. Stay tuned and thanks for checking out my game!
Thank you for suggesting - it's something I'm actively looking into, but I'd have to see how it would fit with the longer-term plans for game balance and what role earlier research nodes should play in the late game, if at all.
