Very nice fun game. Want to see more of these here! ;-)
Would give it a 5/5, but have to substract 1 point for the following reason: Having to repeat the full map on death nearly made me ragequit once. The cool idea of casting spell by gesture then becomes horrible then when having to do it again and again.
Well i finally made it...

Nice casting system - good game play (really might do better as a rogue like with random dungeons generated imo) - Really the only thing that detracted was the story just plain bad.

HaHA! Just completed a no-damage, 100% clear run (I allowed myself to use Blood Magic, but no taking hits). I couldn't quite get away with no upgrades, though. Ice Breath 2 is mandatory to deal with the first skeleton in the maze, and I needed Shock 2 for various other things (though I believe any attack spell would have worked). I still managed to end the game with the other five crystals still in hand, though.

I wish I could go back to maps I ve been through and left things behind. Like the one with those impossible Draculas...

still can't fire a spell... even after trying every click and drag approach (that you suggested)... can't even get through the opening door. perhaps a tutorial would help.

And I normally a master at games like this, so it really says something about it that I am stuggling so hard with it.

Looks like such a wonderful game. Too bad its practically impossible to beat. I cant beat the spider level on master, and I cant beat the skeleton level on easy. Please rebalance the difficulty, give us more room to actually use our spells. So many places make it impossible to use the spells at range, the enemies are in our face before we can kill them.

I absolutely loved this game. I'm normally more attracted to the randomized "true" dungeon crawlers, but this puzzle-crawler was certainly worth it!
Try to force a reload: Right click on the game, select "This Frame" > "Reload Frame". This a HTML5 game hosted on another server, so you'll have to disable script-blocking extensions. If you have some weird browser you might have to disable some security options as well.
If you haven't started the game on Master difficulty, you should see tutorial hints in the bottom right corner. Follow their instructions and you'll find out how to open doors ;)

I'm not sure if it's just me but I have no sound and the game starts to hand after I play for a while. Anyone else have this problem?

i can't even get a spell to fire... hold space, vortexes appear, highlight with mouse, click... nothing, let go of space, nothing... move in the direction of the shot, nothing... how do you fire a spell?

Advidses: First two upgrades must be ice spell and lightning, without it it is not possible to pass the maze with skeletons (( a bit bad designed because it is the most difficult level in the game. Next, try to get invisible on this level. Upgrade it and /or shield for defense. At last, upgrade spell casting boost full. Look for purple potion in all levels, this will increase health. With this advises the game will be very easy. I d like to have more lvls with stronger enemies.

Dude this game is awesome! The developer needs to start right away on a sequel! i know there is a spell for it but maybe letting us move two spaces a turn would be nice. i love the turn system and think it would be cool if you could add floor advantages like the slime monster trails slowing your walk while other grounds could enhance your spells effect or damage output or something like that. Oh and obviously more spells!!! The last idea i have is to make it to where once you've beaten the game on a lower difficulty you can replay it with the same spells unlocked upgrades on the next level of difficulty. That would mean locking higher difficulties until lower ones were beaten but it would be really awesome to have that kind of system. The story was hilarious. The gameplay itself sometimes seemed a little laggy in response time but thats more my computers fault than anything else. Great game!

Has anyone figured out a way to beat the Hedge Maze (level 2-2, I think) without taking damage or upgrading Frost Breath? I'm not stuck, I'm trying to do a minimal/no upgrades run, and wondering how much I can go without.
Wow, that is an ambitious goal! Not sure how far you can get with that, though. I know you can finish the maze without upgrades. And you can make it through without taking damage, but both at once that's tough! You'll have to ignore the skeletons at the graveyard for sure. The critical point are the two skeletons at the bottom. To defeat them without taking damage you'll need Magic Missile on level 2. Frost Breath on level 2 is not necessary, though it might be in the level after that. :)

Yesturday was running fine. Came back today to play a few more levels and the opening screen wont even load. Doesn't even start the initial Kongregate ad, so looks like this is a problem with Kongregate's loader.

Ok, that was pretty awesome. But, it would be really nice to have some carry over - some bonus in the next game, because of my winning the first. Like a bandana of infinite ammo or something.
"Preparing ingredients" should only be visible for a few seconds. Please, please, please help us fix this by at least telling us what kind of browser you are using :)
Then try to force a reload: Right click on the game, select "This Frame" > "Reload Frame". If it still doesn't work, could you open the developer tools console (usually F12 or CTRL+SHIFT+i, you might have to select the console tab in the new toolbar) and send the contents to support@HypnoticOwl.com? Would be a great help!
Yep, it's a little RPG-ish with the spell points but that's about it. We call it a Dungeon Puzzler. If you don't agree with the tags, please be so kind and rate them accordingly :)

One thing I don't like, is that near endgame the game gets easier and easier (playing on adept) Fireball/ lightning ball are a bit much at times, as can be dragon's breath. I hardly ever had to use tactical freezes anymore at one point - or any tactical spells for that matter. And once you get extension, it's basically good game. Even with one point in it everything is a cakewalk - once you put points there and can cast 3/4 spells every turn, nothing can even come close to you.
But apart from this and some other gripes (lack of variations in enemies in level, lack of interaction with items in-level. Could certainly use more in-game secrets and indeed, in-level checkpoints) this is a great game! I love the spellcasting, it makes so much sense - Propelling spells with an extra dot behind the formation, for example. Can not wait for a seuquel or extended version!

I, for one, loved this game. I think the way you made the spellcasting system work with the level maps was brilliant. I couldn't just barge in and fling spells around without planning ahead, but I wasn't railroaded into using only one type of strategy, either. Few games find that balance, and I think you did that well. The puzzles were challenging, but never felt unfair or needlessly hard to me. Every time I discovered just the right combination of spell and positioning to get past the enemies, the little "Aha!" moment made me feel like a genius.
I did occasionally find myself wishing for an "undo" button because I made a move, and then immediately realized what I should have done differently. Going back even just one step would have saved me from a lot of restarts. That said, the lack of such an option didn't kill my enjoyment.
The storyline made me smile, and the animation and graphics were beautiful. Fantastic work, Hypnotic Owl. 5/5.
What do you mean with "doesn't work"? If you are using the arrow keys, you should be in the game. You can use WASD or the numpad keys instead, but it's really meant to be played with mouse or touch input. It would be nice if you could send us the content of the developer console (F12) to support@HypnoticOwl.com should you run into any bugs.

Not my thing. I think that this spellcasting method would work nicely in a non-turn-based environment. Here it's just slowing the gameplay. Good luck with the next game.

Good game, but would realy like a level select - it would be great if I could go back to an earlier level and try to beat my score!

Uh, I don't know this because I set myself on fire or anything, but:
Careful with the burn effect of the fireball spell, you can burn yourself if you use it on an enemy that is too close to you.
