You are correct with checkpoints breaking the arcade spirit :) maybe something to consider - checkpoints as an option but when enabled there would be separate/no highscore
It's something to consider, currently you can have some health back everytime you level up, I'm quite sure that with some practice you can last a lot :) there's a small easter egg building around if you get far enough!

Pretty boring charging seems pointless aginst any non sheild enemy (just spam your dash) shotgun takes too long to use noting to make gameplay more interesting
Hey man if you don't like Guy slashing stuff in the future(which we made in 1 week) we'll I'm sorry. There are score bonus and exp gain when you use charged slashes. I'll implement a shotgun requirement reduction system everytime you level up if the team agrees.

There is a level-up but no upgrade system? It got repeative after a while. Bosses every 10 lvls, check points, and ability to upgrade and learn new skills would add a lot of flavor. It's a superb game but the potential hasn't been utilized to its full
Having a upgrade system was something we couldn't afford in the week we made this game for a gamejam so for now you gain 1 hp per level but I think I'll implement a reduction system for the shotgun everytime you level up so you can use it more frequently.

That sensation that you feel when you play it for the first time is unexplicable.
Game music is good and love the game art !.
