This is great, as a few people have already said, the graphics on the characters is fabulous, much better than the bigger versions of Protector, and I find the game on the whole more fun than the bigger ones. The only thing I miss from the later ones is the upgrades on tiles, etc.

After like 50 attempts.. I made it. I beat marathon. :D
Tip: make sure your defenders are not wasted, place them where they can hit both lanes. use slow and debuff wisely. I had 80% of my defenders in the lower part of the map.
My main force was firemages, general. no splash. had well upgraded bluemages to counter the diablos. in the middle circle I used 4 necromancers that I upgraded as much as i could.
The finalboss is one tuff SOB.. ran 5 times thru my setup. I beat it with 2 life left..and he only runs in the left lane. great game! :D

I got to lvl 48 on marathon , by going pure mage green, red and necromancers. All the green specialized on poison, reds general, and necromancers on general. Still not sure how the necrosis works. I think my setup could improve with some slow, but that wrecks my earlygame. Tricky..

This is actually BETTER than protector. It has just gone too complicated. There should be infinite waves mode, though.

I love the part where I always have enough gold to level up my units and make new ones and I also love the part where this game is almost possible to beat.

tommycool, in addition to everything that matthewskeew said, if this was even a knock off of protecter he couldnt get sued for it because it never uses the name protecter in the game so itd be its own seires

tommycool, is something wrong with you? you played the game through all the parts saying 'made by undefined' to see it is like protector, you failed to see that it is obviously older and you completely miss the fact that it is MADE BY THE SAME PERSON AND A PREQUEL TO PROTECTOR!!!
I think it's really unfair that retards like this get this game's rating down because they are total blockheads and think it is a rip-off

you guys are all morons this is fking ULTIMA ONLINE YOU KNOW SECOND AGE THIRD DAWN KINGDOM REBORN MONDAINS LEGACY moongate that take you to places you have marked, or green acres, the GM only area, unless they wish you to go there......the memories here...

Right, so something I tend to hate about descriptions of how to win a level: how vague they are. I got to 45 with the strategy silverblade82's strategy, which was only to 41. With the very vague strategy of Fire-and-Ice spamming ~10 fire/16 ice, I got to 29. Maybe I should begin taking my own notes and try to see what works and what doesn't. >_<

Also, I've found that each of the five versions has a unique touch which makes some parts more enjoyable than others. For example, in this game, I actually like the look of the enemies better. Also, the units upgrading change drastically in look--something which was mostly dropped later on. I like the effect. Some time, I should compile all the strengths/weaknesses of each version for ideas/suggestions to bounce around if/when a new Protector is started. ;)

"Heh, heh. Four down, two to go. One hard--shouldn't be a problem; I just beat moongate which is also listed as hard. Marathon--even easier, as my units will have more time to level up."
*ten minutes later*
"Alright, so maaaaaaaybe this will be a bit harder than I anticipated..." :P (Got to around 30 on Star Room, and survived 'til 35 on Green Acres. Dang, I thought I was better than that...)

In order, I beat
-Protector (a year or two ago)
-Protector III
-Protector: Reclaiming the Throne (with the knowledge I gained from Protector III), both Normal and Hardcore,
-And just recently, Protector IV: Mercenary.
...The ONLY one left?
The original, the prototype, Defender. *crosses fingers* I'm gonna need all the luck I can get, 'cause I remember playing Defender before Protector and quitting when I found Protector 'cause Protector was easier. :P

i actually love this game...the enemies looks more realistic, and its actually, hate to say the word but FUN!And people have the discussion and which was first....this is a "prototype" made by undefined before he made Protector and is what lead into our beloved Protector games. And even in this"prototype' version of protection...Undefined still proves to be a genius and a great developer. He really is an iconistic character in tower defense games.his success is leading to bigger and better games.Even Jack The Fugitive,a small yet still great game is proof that, in short words many people can relate to...Totally awesome...Inspiring...Ana most of all...EPIC!!
and i hope to god to see an MMO from all this!No that not pushy,we all know he could do it!5/5 and favorite:D

this was the first "protecter" but called defender and i like this one batter because the new one if crap because you cant change the elemnet

I like it, but it needs badly a increase speed button, it got boring after a few minutes because I just wait most the time without doing nothing.

i actually don´t know which was first, but i think its even better than protector. with different types of mages (colours) theres more tactics in this game. i don´t think the few things which are new in protector are needed - this game´s even better - love it :> 5/5

Defender is NOT a Rip off. It's A Old Design of Protector. This is the First "Protector" Game Plus it's made by the same person.

Tips for game: If you're just beginning, I'd recommend the second level. There's different strategies, mine is to use mainly mages, but depending on how you want to play, there's no best place to put them.
