The biggest problem I've experienced so far is that it's enough to get close to the obstacles to get sent back to the beginning. I reckon it should be possible to get one step closer.

I like the premise, the retro-vibe is nice. I'd take a look at the hitbox of the long cactusses, and how the 'finish' is registered (In some levels I had to pass it several times before it let me go to the next level). Since the game is about 'finding family again', it'd be nice to either show level progression (e.g. 'level 5 out of 10) or to replace the flags with kangaroos, and show how many family members are yet to be found. Also wondering why the up-key can't be used for jumping. But I like the level designs mostly :) there are some nooks and crannies where it's hella hard to not walk into an enemy, but for the rest they look good. Good luck on development!
