Love the pieces in this game. Wish there was an option to play on the largest board with the most pieces vs different levels of AI though, once you get to the final level there's not much more to do as it's pretty easy to beat the AI. Would love to see a version where you can set up a game against human opponents (two people on the same pc) too!

Great game, but the AI can be quite slow to process on later levels, freezing the whole browser. 3/5 for that reason.

I think a better way to code this AI would be with heuristic programming. The basic premise: Write a class that has a default number variable that reflects the piece's strength. Then apply that variable to all possible moves and determine what piece should be moved next. But consider the flag an immovable piece and add a very high, very negative value (negative infinity if you can) and focus on protecting the piece. I'm writing this because in some instances the pieces won't block opposing pieces that will get to the flag on the next turn, which is a bit disappointing. Other than that, a pretty solid job and a pretty good take on a Chess-like. 5/5

great game, on a side note, a better a.i. would be nice and also on moves that go across the board the arrow becomes obnoxiously large
I am currently working on another game. This is an idea I would love to revisit at some point in the future and add multiplayer and more pieces and game modes to.

Dev: Have you seen chessvariants.org? It has hundreds of varieties of chesslike games. Could give you some new ideas for pieces, board, objective, etc. I wish there were more games like this on Kong. Thanks!

A very good game. It may not look fancy, but it plays really well. It starts off easy, but gets hard as you progress.

Congratulation! You've created a very good game!
Piece movements and power (level) are very straightforward and quickly assimilated. Gameplay is somewhat easier to grasp than classic chess but every bit as engaging.
You may have just created the game that brings the chalenge of chess to to a class of game-players who previously would have considered it too difficult to enjoy.
I think those suggestions about developing this into a regular board game are a good idea, too. =)

Creative revision of the classic Chess. Takes a little getting used to... but once you figure out the AI is a sucker for a sacrifice its easy. RE the suggested capture a piece = you get to use it... it would unbalance the game very fast. Get a couple of pieces ahead and you're unstoppable. 4/5 because graphics could be better and AI needs work. It'll take years to figure out the possible strategies...

This is great, And in responce to what yutterh said, If I was a board game company I would buy this game SOFAST. Also this is just an idea, But if you ever decide to make some kind of sequal or something, Maybe you can add the Shogi rule (Japanese chess) that when you take a piece, then it becomes yours and you can place it on an empty space on the board. Plus if you think this is a good idea.

Wait a minute... it randomizes the positions of the troops when you restart some of the levels? That kinda kills some of the "puzzle" aspect of it, don't you think?
Under rating threshold (hideshow)
nice game! be great to see puzzle stages where it is all set up and you only have like one correct way to complete it! love spending time on those :)

Fantastic game. It would be slightly more challenging if there was a check rule, where you are required to block/defend the flag.

Not sure where else to post this, the Hard AI has been improved quite a bit although I am not yet done improving it. Any feedback would be appreciated!

yeah, i also think you gotta work out on that AI, the game is really good and i love the concept, but the AI doesnt protect the flag, and has no idea of piece value, they exchange a "minotaur ++" with a "normal horse" sometimes(i know you understand what i mean ;) ) good work though

Spagheti you will now be deleted of kongregate servers...
I like it it was to easy however. Worth my time though. If you tweek the AI a little it might help. I do not think it was just me.

I would rethink all the AI, and make so that the "easy" don't think ahead, the "medium" thinks 1 move ahead, and the "hard" thinks 2 moves ahead. Right now there's very little or maybe no difference between the 3 levels. The way it is, they should be called "random moves", "irracional", and "really dumb".

you have a wife? tell her about this game and let her play. then you may look for as many hookers as you want while your wife allows you to have an orgy in the house.

I will be trying to improve the AI this weekend and fixing the end game screen. I have a full time job and wife so that is why any updates have been slow. If I could improve the AI I will prob remove the Medium mode and replace it with Hard, while adding a Very Hard mode for the new AI.
To respond to skiracer33's comment, Easy mode would not go anywhere, there are plenty of people who are not great at Chess and I think Easy mode makes this fun and challenging for them.
All the feedback I have received on Kongregate has been awesome and I will be taking a lot of the advice to heart for a Check Flag 2 down the road.

if you cant write a much better AI, just make the AI's army stronger (you still at least have to solve the problem the AI doent move away from the monters who has more long move and can take the castle from a distance)

Even on the highest difficulty level, the enemy AI almost always refuses to take a piece if its piece would be taken-- to "trade." Even if it would take two of my pieces for one of its own. Even if my vulnerable piece is about to take one of the AI's pieces. Which is silly.
So here's an idea. I'm not sure how easy it is to do this in Flash, but maybe assign each piece a "point value"? Then the AI can compare the point values of pieces (maybe adjust them if it's about to lose a piece anyways) and decide whether an exchange is worthwhile.
Additionally, the AI should ALWAYS protect the flag. As it is, I've been in this situation:
XMX
XEX
XFX
Where M is my piece (a shield dwarf that moves two spaces), E is an enemy piece, F is the enemy flag, and X is an empty space. And the AI does this:
EMX
XXX
XFX
Literally committing suicide. That shouldn't happen, ever.
