i just had a really good idea: if you could draw one thing, then make that like an overlay and draw something else. then you could have two pattens going on the same screen, in two different colors.

In David Brin's novel Glory Season, men play a competitve version of Conway's Game of Life (setting up a grid of (if I remember correctly) clockwork tiles that flip from white to black depending on the state of neighbors. Then each side sets up patterns and wages war with the other side... I always hoped someone would attempt a computer version of the fictional competitive game.

as it's already been said, just see it as a nice mathematical challenge ^^, if you want the easiest nice one, try the following pattern : take a 3*3 square, and fill it like this 0X0 00X XXX (X are filled cells)

there's no "instant win" as it is not really a game... but, maybe a nice little test for mathematicians...
Locos, as Arisse said, you should add some patterns (or create a load/save system)... there are some simple ones that can be funny to watch.

It is funny that I find this game amazing? Cuz I like to make some patterns and just look at them. So adding some samples will help and also something like to send our own design and guidelines so we can know where is the center.
