If you want to beat nightmare difficulty, you actually want to expand as little as possible, since more surface area on your walls means more zombies reaching you every day

We can turn a wasteland into a fully working farm or some comfortable houses... can we teach people how to be soldiers in anywhere except a school? Oh HEAWWLLLL NAWWW!

Where this game has positives is overshadowed by a confusing difficulty spike. Zombies will massively increase and soon overtake all of the surrounding lots, but what's worse is that you can't train enough soldiers fast enough, and that's if you mange to secure a school in time. People constantly die at a rate of one or two a day, and when not from hoards it is from spontaneous events... And I'm playing on normal mode. -.-

It won't let me build farms when my people are starving. My first park converted OK but now I've reclaimed two more and can't build anything

On April 18th 2014, the 42 surviving citizens of HIGH CHARITY drafted a constitution, declared the city a safe haven for all who desire order in this world.
thus dawned a new civilization...
and all those who oppose this new Covenant shall shall be publicly humiliated and shamed before being executed to the Zombie horde

After days of frustration, losing over and over, I took the easy way out and won the hard badge by refreshing the page when something went wrong for me. At first I felt relieved, but then it just seemed empty. I've never gained a badge dishonestly before. So I came back, resolved to play and win fair and square no matter how long it took. FIRST TRY, powered through everything like I had a golden touch. Missions went right, hordes fell apart, cured the disease by day 100. Feels good man. Feels good.

HARD BADGE
Start with hospital, big farm and laboratory(preservation 1st) „touching” your 4 starting quarters(capture ‘em asap), go for the one corner of the map (you might loose some territories in the middle, that’s okay)keep in your fort as little as possible survivors(~20%)if you lost too much survivors(due to fails like fort defend)press F5 on the news(it will allow you to turn back time and try again), do not be scared to take actions that requires ~20%danger(F5 will help you repair mistakes:)but send 2 people instead of one, even if it doesn't decrease danger

If you're trying to get the "Lasting Legacy" badge, you have to play differently than you do on the lower difficulties. While a base risk of ~20% might seem like too much, any less would mean that you aren't using your survivors as much as you can. They're useless in the base, and every day you aren't out expanding is a day that the hordes increase in size and more undead surround your walls. Defensive buildings are your friends, as they free up survivors to go out and do things instead of defending the base. You'll also need to get a lab and start researching as soon as possible, preferably the ones that provide offensive/defensive bonuses, and maybe binoculars if you're worried about running out of survivors. Get as many survivors as you can, because you'll need every one to defend when hordes appear, so plan missions so that everybody's home when the horde arrives. Once you get past a certain size, it becomes massively easier, and you can just coast to the finish of your choice.

good game. but like most games of this kind its snowball type of game. so the first 1-10 turns r most important. everything after that is just result of spawnluck, good and bad decisions and priorities of this first turns.
a tip for developer. its possible to make the game more interesting later on by including some powerfull but costly tactical abilities, like this parties. so that player can have an relevant impact on the game later on to compensate bad luck of the start.
for example: give to the leader one explosive trap, one motivational speach and one box with conserved food which he can use once somewhere in the game.
because right now its just about getting hospital and a house near the spawn, and being able to expand to the farm/urban corner of the map as fast as possible.
