Is it possible to have a path where we don't become an apprentice and become self-taught?

Is it possible to have a wizard that does not care about good or evil and is just in the pursuit of knowledge? I would like to do that but when I try some researchers keep locking out.

I love the game and have already done a number of campaigns but I would like an option to change text size because I cannot see the numbers on the upgrade buy setting and the option to slow down the text because I am not a speed reader by any stretch of the imagination. Otherwise love it.

I have had a soft reset three times today is that because there is a glitch with a soft reset or is it that they are actually changing mechanics today
