Kongregate is a browser based game site combining over 65,000 games with achievements, high scores, chat, profiles, payments, and other community features. Kongregate reaches 15 million players per month, who spend over 33 million hours on the site. We are a tight knit team of 40 people with a strong startup culture, and a very independent subsidiary of GameStop, the largest video game retailer in the world.

The majority of Kongregate’s revenue comes from our application platform for virtual goods-based browser games. These range from the more immersive social games to web-based MMOs and strategy games.

We practice iterative, test-driven development, work sustainable hours, and offer competitive compensation. We have very low turnover. We have offices in San Francisco and Portland, with engineering satellites in Denver and Providence.

Lead DevOps Engineer Back to Current Openings ↑

Kongregate is a large-scale platform for web and mobile games. We don't have an sysadmin function currently - all systems work is done by the development team. This has worked well for us, the site is performant and stable. We've reached a scale where it makes sense to have a specialist - you would lead operations and datacenter functions. We currently have around 30 production servers.

Our technology stack is CentOS Linux, MySQL (percona build), Redis, memcached, Ruby 1.9.3, Rails 3, Scout, Redshift and New Relic. We automate all systems administration with Puppet, Kickstarter, and Rake. We don't expect you to have experience with all of these, as long as you are willing to jump in and able to learn quickly:

  • 3-5 years building applications, with experience in systems engineering and software development
  • Great communication skills
  • Linux system administration and automation using Puppet and Ruby
  • MySQL administration and performance optimization
  • Redis and memcached administration
  • Systems monitoring using Scout
  • Web Development using Ruby on Rails a plus
  • Strong systems security mindset

Our engineering team is based in Portland, OR - this position will most likely be there - relocation is available.
