Really very simple way to win is to maniacally build smithies. Upgrading status becomes the way to build even more. Markets don't make stable income, so need only 1 to trade. Never use red "-" to sell all iron, it have smaller price (maybe bug?)

No need to build a smith. Most efficient building is mine, it brings 500 bucks/turn of stable income each. Nice game though
