If you jump over and empty gap that would kill you if you fell off, you die even if you land back on the path. I will try to recreate it for you and take a screenshot.

Nevermind, I must have been on a timer level and run out of time without noticing it. I beat a few of the later levels and aggressively jumped out of bounds without the same issue happening.
