as for your comment on konkrio, you dont have to merge everything you know? In fact the economy in game punishes you for each merge, more powerful units require much more money to maintain. Experiment with utilising a larger less skilled army, you only need soldiers to fight other units, you only need knights to take out fortifications.

Anything more than the standard knight is likely to bankrupt you, but also when an enemy creates one try to cut off its land and it will likely die in one turn.
