For Amidst the Sky: after you “hear sounds outside”, go out there and you’ll see a cloud above a pipe to the right. Jump into that (or any other) cloud and use the arrow keys or WASD to steer in mid-air.
Then maybe get ready to hate me for answering, because the game gets a lot harder.

Also worth noting: pay attention to the symbols in the background; they aren’t just for decoration. In particular, a symbol matching a powerup means “this is probably a good place to use that powerup”…
