The tracklayout should be what makes the game easy or hard, then the graphics should stimulate some sort of primal sadism inside you when you watch the cannon take out 20 foes in one shot etc.
Otherwise, if you want a more unique TD the placement of the towers should be more up to the player. Check out Ancient Planet which is a mix of both
