In this instance, breaking your name into just “fal” may sound a little awkward to you, so I was kind of pointing out that a little. It may not really make sense, and I assume you would have been plenty ok with me just saying “Can I call you ‘Fal’?”, but I wasn’t really thinking of that at the time.
