Under rating threshold (show) My player dies when he leaves the screen, but the game doesn't restart like your game does. Help?

Developer response from Abigayl

In order to keep the game simple, I did not cover that aspect... it is in Tutorial 5.

Under rating threshold (show) I was wondering if it's possible to use flixel framework with stencyl. Can I use it?

+ - !

(0)

Developer response from Abigayl

Stencyl is partially built on the Flixel framework, so the two should be compatible. The official listing of the API might help: http://api.stencyl.com/ (I am still a newbie for the deeper programming, so I cannot say much about the framework at this time)

Under rating threshold (show) Thanks a million for making this. I used to code for game maker and then when I decided to transition to stencyl it was all very confusing, but you've shined a new light on it!. Better then any stupid youtube tutorial I've seen yet!

I'm glad to have helped :). BTW, I think I saw you in the stream... if there is something further I can help you with, please let me know (was sleeping when you posted).

Under rating threshold (show) Well ABIGAYL The Movement part kinda confused me. Being totally new to flash, the functions seem so foreign. Mainly, I used the = thing.instead of the is down. Im not sure how to relay my message but it would be awesome if you could make an updated version as i am interested in flash games. I am at a complete loss and you must forgive my negligence. I seek your kind understanding.

+ - !

(0)

Developer response from Abigayl

Deltian, the coding for each arrow being down is still naturally in the coding in the updated version. I think at this point it might be easier to directly show you how to do the coding. Feel free to stop by stream (livestream.com/poweredbyflowers), and if I am on, I can walk you through the tutorial myself.

Under rating threshold (show) Can you make a tutorial where it shows how to add aiming at the game? (You click and the character shoots at the mouse)

+ - !

Developer response from Abigayl

Just wait two days and it should be up :P. That is what tutorial 4 is about.

Dec. 06, 2011

Under rating threshold (show) I think it'd help navigation if you were to put A/D or Left Arrow/Right Arrow as controls as well, A/Left to go back and D/Right to go fowards. Perhaps W/S and Up Arrow/Down Arrow as well, W/Up back and Down/S fowards.

+ - !

(0)

Developer response from Abigayl

Listerine, have you looked at tutorial 3? ;) This is a basic game. I kept it as simple as possible. Later on (in #3) I show how to include WASD keys AND how to avoid the ctrl+key issue that crops up with using them ;)

Under rating threshold (show) Are multiplayer games too complex to start off with? And if so, is it possible to make one with Stency? Because, when I cover the basics I want to make my own bird view's multiplayer game.

+ - !

(0)

Developer response from Abigayl

Stencyl is not designed for handling multiplayer games. It can do anything you would normally use AS3 to do (which is just about everything), but multiplayer games are far more complex. I personally don't see myself doing multiplayer games for probably at least year from now... one player is much simpler. Even 2-player local can be trickier (although definitely manageable).

Under rating threshold (show) what about when the actor go's off the screen...it dosen't die it disappears and the game ceeps going with no actor!

+ - !

(-1)

Developer response from Abigayl

That is because the tutorial was already getting long and there was not enough room to go over this extra coding. You can skip ahead to Tutorial 5 to see how to force the player to stay in-bounds.

I'm sorry that you don't understand the sheer amount of work that goes into making a video game. This is why lots of games take months, if not even years, to make. What you see here is just the surface.

Instead, I am doing an entire new set for 2.0 as soon as I am done with my latest game. EDIT: Just added the three major changes in the instructions heading.

Yes it will... I now see why you picked that username too... that's a LOT of comments. Perhaps PM me your questions in the future? As for the gun, that's partially covered in tutorial 4 (just reverse it to have enemies aiming at the player).

Under rating threshold (show) As far as I can see, this AbiGayl person appears to be one of the nicest persons out there. I mean, talk about contributing to helping people out! free tutorials for the programming program (I know, I know, sounds weird) and answers everybody who has a problem in the comments! There has to be a stake here - oh wait. He has a stream. He just wants people to become his viewers for money. Oh, nevermind, all stream income goes to charity. Best internet person ever achievement unlocked, AbiGayl.

+ - !

(-1)

Developer response from Abigayl

Two problems with what you said: 1. my stream is free (both to me and to viewers, I don't get any revenue from it (nor do I pay the insane amounts for my over-use of saved videos)), 2. I am a she, not a he. Besides that, you're pretty accurate, thanks :).

Under rating threshold (show) Im trying to make something more RPG like, i managed to make the 8 direction movement, some houses with their working doors. But i cant find where or how to make some tiles impassable terrain so the player cant just walk away from the scene to never be seen again or step over these houses. Im pretty sure I can make it making every tile an actor but I dont think that should be the proper and efficient way

Under rating threshold (show) Is there a better/other way to make characters other than Paint?

Paint.NET is not the same as normal Paint. You can also use Pencyl (it's included in Stencyl) or download Gimp.

Under rating threshold (show) Great tut, but when i finished this tut, my "enemy" didn't 'kill' the "player". what's wrong..?

+ - !

(-1)

Developer response from Abigayl

There are a couple of things to check for: 1. Did you remember to attach your behaviors to the enemies/player? 2. Is the player hitting the enemy? If they pass through each other, then in the game center, check your collision groups, in the player, and make sure the actor button is green so they will hit each other. If neither of those two, feel free to send me a screenshot of the behaviors and I can try to help. BTW, I like your avatar :)

Under rating threshold (show) i followed the tutorial exactly or so i thought, the only thing i did different was the sprites, mine is black instead of blue. my collision is a bit wacky. On yours, you must actually touch the square to die, in mine, you only have to get about an 1/8 of an inch away from the bad guy and you die. any idea how to fix this?

Under rating threshold (show) Not saying this is a bad tutorial, but this dosn't help me at all. I wish it was more " In-depth " you seem to skip quiet a few scenes that appears on stencyl.

+ - !

(-1)

Developer response from Abigayl

What do you mean? This tutorial is supposed to be basic; the later ones go more in-depth (2-5). The few scenes I do not cover, I still write about. If you could send me a PM with more details as to what the issue was, I'd appreciate it. You can also come to the stream: livestream.com/poweredbyflowers

Do you mean like in an RPG? If so, the coding is a bit complicated. If you can tell me exactly what you are looking for though, I may be able to make it into a tutorial or just show it in a livestream for you.

Under rating threshold (show) Hi thank you so much for doing these tutorials I just finished the tutorials that stencyl puts out and Im excited to find yours. I was just starting this one when I saw you starting with making your own characters. Can you tell me how big I need to make them and also how do I make them into 3 or 4 or more panel drawings so I can make them look cool? Thanks!

+ - !

(-2)

Developer response from Abigayl

I generally make my characters around 40x40 (sometimes taller). You want them to be large enough to be seen, but not large enough to get in the way. I'm not sure about what you mean by the panels though...

This was for Stencyl 1.0. I have worked hard though to keep the "Extra Information" section up-to-date with any changes. For example, the third listed is that the headings are no longer naturally there. Instead you need to click "Add Event" on the top of the left-side palette.

Rulis, it depends on your level of experience. For experienced programmers, I totally agree with you. Stencyl is not designed for them. It's designed for people just starting out in programming. For them, Stencyl is a great tool to learn how to program with. Besides, this is a tutorial for helping people learn how to program, not a question of which program is better for programming.
