Just ran through your tutorial. Nice job! The coding had me a bit worried, but you mastered it wonderfully. Thanks! I look forward to your next 4 tutorials. I plan on making a side scroller woth this program, so we'll see.

i was just shown Stencyl when i voiced my irritation trying to work with Gamemaker and coding. I'm liking it..and these tutorials should prove helpful. Once i get through them maybe ill figure out how to go about making an RPG or some other game ideas i have. ^_^
RPG games are very tough to do for your first Stencyl game. I would advise focusing on something smaller first to learn the ropes. Perhaps to a simple turn-based combat game that could develop into an RPG later ;)
I have tried Scratch myself as I had to tutor a student in it (I am a tutor IRL). While Scratch has some benefits (the color-based collision coding is sharp once one learns how to do it), it has nowhere near the power of Stencyl (see my previous response to Nekuray).

PLEASE HELP! I have ''tested'' your game and it's scaling with window to fit it... I have troubles with this on my own game (not public posted) and I want you to tell me how you do it... I have tried nearly anything possible but nothing helped... if I change to ''start in full screen mode'' nothing appears (just black after it's loaded), otherwise it's not scaled currently. PLEASE, help me to solve this problem!
I did not use the scaling options for this game. In fact, I have not used any scaling in my games like that. If it's just black, it might be that another code is stopping the game from loading. Are there error messages in your logs? Also, you can likely find quicker support in the Stencyl forums: http://community.stencyl.com/index.php
In Stencyl 3.x, you can add a collision event instead and pick actor with group and go from there. I also have a more updated series for 2.x (which is much more similar to 3.x than 1.x): kongregate.com/games/Abigayl

I never would have thought a 12 year old could make a simple shooter from scratch. 5/5! Please make more advance tutorials like this one!
Compassion International. It's a Christian organization that tries to help poor children all over the world get food, water, education, etc. http://www.compassion.com/
Ah, that was the original plan but it was quickly nixxed when I decided to make these tutorials interactive. In this tutorial, I already used the arrows for game movement and later use WASD for the game too.

I was looking for new Kongregate games when I stumbled upon this... recently I've been finding it extremely hard to use the game engine Unity3D, where as it consists to look pretty easy: but for someone as young and inexperienced as my self anything that involves code is unyielding! I've decided to give Stencyl which I've never heard of before a go. I'll be following your tutorial series now. :) Thank you very much!!
Tutorial 4 will go over cursor-based shooting. You can use some of the ideas there and expand on them to make an action RPG game, but I strongly advise against it for a first game. RPGs are generally much more complex than other games you can make instead and then build your way up to making an RPG. Just like the platformer though, if there is enough interest, I will try to make a tutorial for it later on. :)

Thanks for the tutorial i needed some knowledge and tools on how to create my first game in flash and didnt how to start, i will try this for sure :D

Amazing tutorial, this is a great way for me to try out new game developing software without having to read an entire book or go forum surfing. 5/5
I'm glad you liked it. I am trying to make them so that you can do each tutorial in about 30 minutes to an hour (depending on in if you have to make the graphics, etc.). Thanks for the 5!

thanks for tutorial! I now can (at least start)) to make my own game! I'd like to see more tutorials made by you (i can't stand those developers program tutorials)). Thanks again!

Now I don't have to read through long forums trying to know how I can make games. Thanks. I can feel my first game coming up. :D

Congratulations for your patience and care teaching things to beginners. I was wondering about using stencil and watching your tutorial made me want to take the first shot at it. Please keep up the good work and do not get disappointed if people do not rate accordingly (it happens A LOT on kong). By the way lemme know if you ever need artwork for your tutorials and games. Best of luck to you.
Aye doc, I have gotten used to that unfortunately (can see the first comment here by "SteelTroll"). Will be sending you a PM about the art since I always could use help. Thanks!

One issue I see with the initial code is that if I hold up or down first, I'm able to go right and left without releasing up or down. If I hold left or right first, I am unable to go up and down without first releasing left or right. Is this an error in the "if" logic for the player actor?
This is not an "error" so to speak. I kept things as simple as possible for this tutorial. All of tutorial 3 (work-in-progress right now) is about improving the controls to be more responsive, 8-way, and using WASD keys.

There is one glitch in the game maker, it keeps losing my actors (it says there's none there, and when I go to upload new ones it still shows the ones I should still have on the upload screen)
This sounds like a problem with Stencyl. If you post the issue with screenshots and error messages to the forums, someone can likely help you out. http://community.stencyl.com/index.php/board,3.0.html
Could you please give me more details. What is not working with the collision detection? If there's an error, I want to fix it!
EDIT: I just tried again to follow the tutorial to make the example game and it is still working for me. I don't know why you (and the others rating your comment up) are having issues. Please send me more information so that I can figure out what is going on for you.

In the tutorial, did you use paint or some other program to make the player? And do you have any suggestions for a good free graphics maker? Thanks!
I very highly suggest Paint NET. It is free to download and use, and there is a wealth of options in it. It's how I was able to make things like the lava in The Lonely Square. http://www.getpaint.net/

Well done. It would be great if we have this game as main overview and other smaller game tutorial to cover more focused topics. Basically, modularize the contents.
Thank you. Two more tutorials are already planned. The next will go over the main ideas on how to use attributes, both local and game-wide ones. The third will go over mouse-based shooting.

Thanks! I've tried so many other websites and tutorials, but this stencyl and this one are easily the best! I only ask for one thing: can you add the number of slides on your tutorial, (If you haven't already, I haven't checked out the other ones yet).
The number of slides is roughly 70-90, depending on the tutorial. Since I don't have any space to write out the slide number, instead there is a bar that goes across the bottom that visually shows about how far in the tutorial you have gotten.
The tutorial is about 90 scenes long... so I do understand if people just click on through. I kept it as short as possible while still having detailed explanations and ending with a working game.

This is a great tutorial compared to the one stencyl provides. I thank you for this, and I will definetely continue to the other tutorials. 5/5
The categories were confusing users, so Stencyl deleted them. My version still had them included. If I can, will try to update it to get rid of the categories. Thanks for the 5. I'm glad it helped :)

this is a great tutorial, you see i used to be will3947, but then they banned me, but this helped me start! thanks! Dont bother to reply because they'll ban me after i post this (I'm really sick of getting banned)

I didn't know this program even existed, now i do. Thanks a lot for that :) And i'll be sure to watch all your tutorials and rate them accordingly ;)
Thanks Wolfgang. StencylWorks is still rather new. I started this summer when it was coming out of beta. Please let me know if you have any questions after (or during) the tutorials. I'm here to help.

This tutorial is a great help, it's helped me understand the basics, however, I am still in the process of downloading stencyl, I will move on to the next tutorials when I have completed this one, and after I've seen all five, that's when I will know whether or not I will need to ask for more help. Keep up the good work. :D 5*'s for interactivity and clarity of the tutorial.
Thanks for the 5's. I'm always happy to help. If you need any further assistance, that is what I have setup my livestream for. If I am on the computer, I am on there, and programming help takes precedence over just about everything else :)

i like the tutorail but i cant seam to get my charector to not have the white stuff around it cause it looks like a box please help.
You can either use a graphics program which allows you to make transparent pixels, or, when you import the image, set the white around the actor to be the transparent color (it's an option you get right after uploading the image into Stencyl).
Thankfully that has not been the response; at least the ones that have been brought to my attention are generally users' own takes on the tutorials or at least some tweaks to the set. I have seen a few direct clones, but a good portion are building their own games with just the ideas learned from the series.
Use whatever graphic program (or can use Pencyl program inside of Stencyl) and find the resize options. For example, in Paint.NET, on the top, I hit Image -> Resize. Be sure to take a look at the collision size when uploading a new image since it doesn't always scale to the new size (so your graphic might be smaller but the collision box might be still the same size).
If you are sure the codings are the same, there are two things to check: 1. Make sure you have ATTACHED the behaviors to the actors (both enemy and player), 2. Go to the Game Center, into the collision groups and make sure that your player (click on it on the right) collides with your actors (so the button is green).

Also, I had never heard of the Stencyl program before, neither do I have any experience what so EVER with programming of any kind.
I browsed through your tutorial here and though to myself: "Shit, this person made me understand everything here without even having the software of my own to try it on." In other words, I just downloaded Stencyl. First tutorial on anything I have ever seen that makes it so understandable for us newbies. I mean - I'm just really impressed. You just gave me something do to in my rainy, Norwegian holidays. 6/5.

Thank you, Abigayl. Couldn't ask for a better introduction to StencylWorks. Would only suggest a mention of Pencyl, if someone has an image they want to use for an Actor but just needs a quick tweak. Looking forward to seeing the rest of your series.

I have got to the part in tutorial where we are playing your game... I have a problem, how can I make it where if I go off the screen it restarts?
Jacob, that's explained in tutorial 5. It was purposely left out of this tutorial to keep things simpler (and then waited until 5 since I wast trying to figure out the best way to explain simply).

Hmm do I delve into making games? haha this is a great idea that you can draw others into doing this although there is a temptation to leave it to others :s Good luck with this though it's a great idea I think.
I think it is beneficial to try making your own game, at least once. It gives a new appreciation for video games when you have tried to make one yourself.
You can either delete the whitespace (i.e. using an eraser tool), or when you upload it, select the white border as the transparent color (will be an option if you read all of the parts when uploading the graphic, tisn't in my guide though since the eraser/deletion is more reliable).

The game does not load for me. :( and I really wanted to know how to make a game. I tried all five totorial and none work.
Robo, try again. They were all down for a very short time for me as well (as well as my games). They should work now. Was a Kongregate-wide (or at least all my games) temp crash.
