"Potion of humor - makes you think you're funny, even if you're not"
"Potion for bad memories - makes you remember then makes you forget again"
"Potion of potions - makes you better at drinking potions"
So.... all you sell is booze?

One thing I noticed is that the map shows a lot of "somewheres," makes me wonder, WHERE do they lead? But great game over all, the story was really nice, and the drawing was awesome!

I don't care if it's in pixels, I don't care if it's in animation, I don't even care if you give me it in crayon sketches and artworks, but if you can give me a good plot, I will give it my favorites and 5/5. That is all.

Hey guys/gals! Someone on NG asked some questions about the backstory of the world and the game. Nothing much, but I thought I should re-post my answers here for anyone interested.
"We know about the old man, but where did his friends go? Did they die in happytown with their families?"-His friends are all dead. I won't say how, why or when, though...
"What does the inside of the wizard's tower look like?"-At first there was supposed to be a scene inside the tower, but I cut it out early on, for pacing purposes. It was important for the puzzles to feel organic, instead of 'new screen-another puzzle'.
"Are there other towns?"-of course there are. Big and small. There used to be a colossal city in the desert with the phoenix, but now there are only ruins. There's a whole world out there. We see only one very small part of it.
"Did the dwarf ever manage to make something of himself?"-I don't know what he'll do next, but he definitely didn't, and won't, climb the mountain.
Cheers!

There are soo many easter eggs :D I found 2 referrings to Looney Tunes, 1 to the Badger song, even a referring to Duncan Macleod in the credits! :) It's a nice thing to find these. Thank you for these

The rabbit says his king is "the tallest rabbit you've ever seen, and he walks on two legs!" Would that be Bugs, by any chance?

So is the brick plotting world domination with the wizzard, competing with the wizzard, or using the wizzard to achieve world domination?
The brick is sentient, and it is of course using the wizard in promoting its own goals of world domination. In the entire multiverse, there may not be another brick as evil as that one.

Once I had finished, and realised everything. I am unashamed to say I shed a tear whilst smiling. I have never seen such an astonishing description of life, and in such a beautiful way. This is probably my favourite game, and I shall certainly come back to it should I ever feel down again. Thank you. 5/5.

I don't get why rating is so low. It is simple in its beauty. This game deserves the first place in the monthly challenge. Seriously :) the story was really slow at the beginning, it was hard for me to get into the game and into the graphics, which are really particular, but that perfectly fit with the story, the characters and the message. I loved it as soon as it touched my heart, after speaking with mr tree :) The music seems as if there is a wind that slowly pushes the story towards something more and more deep that actually is much nearer to real life than anything else. I loved the ambience, loved the story, loved the funny characters. I would make a book or even a movie about this. :) 10/5. I would really appreciate a sequel or another story. Thanks for introducing us to this dream world!
Thank you for the very kind words.
I don't think there's ever going to be a sequel. This story is over. The world of The Grey Rainbow is still alive and out there somewhere, with all its adventures and secrets and dangers. But it is not our story anymore.
I do, however, have an idea for a very short (written) story titled "Letters from Beyond the Rainbow". But only if a lot of people ask for it (and I mean a LOT. Like, a million game views, or several hundred emails and pms ;)

I was kinda skeptical when I first saw this game, didn't really think much of the art initially but it grew on me as I preceded through the game. And after a bit of playing I got really drawn into the great story. Very imaginative and very fun to play.

I'm not a fan of the art. I'm not a fan of the music. I'm not a fan of the hamhanded execution of the writing. I'm not a fan of the railroady, if=>then gameplay.
Yet, somehow, you have managed to take a game with such cliche and unpolished aspects, different parts that should tie itself together into a bad, bad game, and created something with such a great amount of profundity that I teared up a little.
Thank you, very much, for this game. This was fantastic.

"You're back! I'm so happy to see you!" Mother says as you look at her colourless face, filled with sadness and gloom.

At first I was "God no, not a slow story game to plow through just to get a badge" But I thought that I would give it a chance, I'm truly glad that I did. It was amazing, well written and was beautifully made. Thank you for the great time I had playing the game!

This game allows me to forget all the harmful memories in the past and make the most in the present. It is really insightful and I commend that. It gives me new confidence to achieve my goals.

Wait... Im a man, why the hell did I finish this game and have wet eyes? Incredible impact of the story, it is so true. The music was also awesome, graphics ridiculously elegant in it's simplicity, the story incredibly emotional (I screamed in my mind to let the bird go, not to give it to the lady - I guess I failed there as giving her the bird was the right thing to do :))... Probably the best game I have ever played on Kongregate. The rating should be high, high above 4.
As for the sequel, I agree with the author - while it is sad that this story ended, I don't think it should have a continuation. The story is told, the message given, it's purpose has been served. Just like a dream - it came, it went, and now all there is left is for us to remember it a have it change us a bit inside.
Black Olive Games, all I can say...magnificient. Excellently done. Thank you.

Wow. I didn't expect to cry so much... Or at all, really. It's really wonderful to see this... perspective. This subtlety, objectivity that I see people being unaware of. But now I know I'm just as blind. I knew all along that killing the rat was never necessary in the first place, I could just as well have tried using the frog and killing one less. But I killed it anyway. And I knew the phoenix was just as much of a sacrifice as the rat, but it still hurt me so much more. And the story of the old man and his love... I knew they both grew to be happy with their new fate, but it was still so sad to me. It's strange, really, how we want our story characters to be with their true love so bad, even though that hardly happens in real life. Last thing that had me bawling my eyes out: "The colour Royal-blue that you got from the mice. Because everyone needs help once in a while." I guess this game just means a lot to me personally. Thank you for the perspective, thanks for everything.

Setting aside drugs, this game is so so so beautiful. The music is just so good.I am just appalled by the ratings...This has got to be one of the most beautiful game ever, read all the dialogue to believe it !
Hey, thanks! The ratings aren't THAT bad (though I would have preferred them in the low 4's at least ;), considering everything. The artwork may off-put some people (personally, I think it's just right, exactly as I've drawn it) and the huge amount of dialogue may dissuade others. And it's an atypical Flash game; it resembles 'real' adventure games more that the usual Flash adventure game. But mostly, those who give the game a chance like it. We'll see how people react to my new game, which is just around the corner. It's going to be quite different.

Beautifully touching. Loved it. The little squirrel lay on the ground broke my heart. It all did... :) Fantastic game with so many great qualities. :) Really enjoyed this. :) Thank you!

I really enjoyed this game!! Very cool concept with everything being hand-drawn, and great execution. Sometimes it's easy to get lost in how cool the design and concept is, or how interesting the story is, but forget the actual game. You guys didn't lose sight of anything, and even made me laugh a couple times (loved the evil wizard!). Loved it!
The secret ingredient? You just have to be really passionate about everything you're doing. Immerse yourself. And you need to have fun. Mix those three together and EVERYTHING else will fall into place. Doesn't matter if it's a book, a movie or a game, it WILL work.

Oh my gosh! It was brilliant. Fantastic. Thank you for the great story, for the experience. :) I'm just fangirling around because of the game. Thank you again! 5/5

Aww... The moment you finish the story it gives you such a deep sense you have accomplished a long journey. I feel I miss some of the characters... the drunk squirrel :'D
Thank you for this little bit of color in this grey world

Nice to see the Developer still reading comments on a game that hasn't had 'Game News' in nearly 2 years, about the time it was the badge of the day. As other people have noted: the story is excellent and has a level of depth and design that is becoming less and less common these days. Thanks for the game!

It was the first point and click game I ever finished playing without feeling bored. It really changed me, inspire me and made me hopeful. I love how the game's message was encrypted throughout the game. The colour of life, patience in changing and hope. Thanks a lot :)
You're welcome. It's nice to have people realize the game works on many levels. Foremost, it's an adventure. There is meaning behind it, but it's integrated into the story - the adventure itself is the message ;)
Yeah :( We published the game a month ago. Until last week we were only being played by people who like adventure games, and our rating was steadily improving. we hit 3.8 and were still growing, and then presumably someone from Kong management noticed and played the game, and loved it. So they decided to add badges and put us in featured and suddenly everyone noticed us. We started getting a lot of views, on a quite particular game which isn't to everyone's tastes...

Such a beautiful, unique game. Whimsical, funny, charming and heartfelt. By the time I reached the end, I have both shed tears and laughed out loud, and I have most certainly been satisfied with what I had accomplished.

This is an awesome game... in all senses of the word. The story is brilliantly told (I have the PDF and intend to read it) and the music and graphics suit it beautifully. I can't say I entirely saw the main charaters point of view but maybe that is because I have already been on his journey... having said that I was still gripped by the story and it brought a number of tears to my eye. The intricacy and attention to detail, the clear backstories of the characters and the mood of it all was wonderful (even the in-jokes didn't distract from the overall atmosphere). It was like life, it had its highs and lows and there were no guarentees of a happy ending or even an ending... and that was what was delivered, a real life ending (in as much as it ended). Thank you and I look forward to playing more of your games - keep up the good work, please. :)

Not to nitpick, but in the intro text it mentions a "beautiful cacophony of color". The word you want is euphony, cacophony means unpleasant.
But great game!

@wowiki, don't look for a squirrel in the sense of the little brown furry creature you saw in happy town. as said by the dev, it's a silhouette. Took me a while before noticing it. It's in the trees though

Good story. It was not until the end, that I realized that 'color' was the motif in the story. Then I looked at the title "The grey rainbow" and things fell in place. Everything is grey, but it is the individual that adds color to things. Just put on your magic monocles, and you are able to find your Scarlett (color of love)!
