Now I finished the game with all 3 characters. Concerning the luck factor: somehow all match 3 games are a bit luck based. My tip is to play with Ryu first: like mentioned full upgrade and use counter attack and defense in the last fight and it'll be not that hard. I had the most problems when playing with Pixel (with Bit the Bunny it was also easy). Epic game, hoping for a second part!

>boss has twice my health
>boss deals twice my damage
>"use strategy!"
>boss matches 3, boss has a 6x-combo fall in from the top
Goddamn lazy developers, stop padding your game with bosses that must be retried until you get lucky.

So basically I get 800 gems for losing to the boss and none for winning. I guess I'm incentivized to fail. Who needs to save the world anyways?

There's a lot more strategy to this than I expected, I'm impressed. Multiplayer would be awesome, but adjustable difficulty levels with smarter and dumber AI would be even more awesome. The AI sure makes a lot of stupid moves, at least in the earlier levels.

How to beat the last boss: Set up 100% defense and 144% counter. Hope he combos himself to death. It worked eventually.
This is a great little Puzzle Fighter clone, but a few points: Firstly, Heal is WAY too weak. It's basically worthless after the first few levels, it just doesn't do enough to matter. Secondly, every combo should give some benefit. If you get two attacks in the same combo, you do twice the damage, but two defense or counters does nothing. They should stack with each other. Similarly, defense should be able to go above 100%, with any additional defense healing you. That said, with those changes to defense/counter, the base values should probably be lowered quite a bit to retain balance.

Final boss is pretty tough no matter what anyone says. 50% of how quickly you beat him is luck. Of course there is strategy.Obviously you want everything max upgraded. Defense and counter are gunna be your main moves here. But, really the only way to beat him before he kills you is to get huge combos. One thing to take advantage of is the AI. It will usually always pick a special attack, then regular attack if available. When it looses health, he'll use healing gems most turns. If you can get him low enough, just keep attacking and your attacks should overpower his healing. Rage is also very important. But never use Rage if he has a counter or defense on, that will just waste it.

Final boss pff. I'm irritated that the first two fights, I'm getting almost -no- matches, and when the enemy goes, gets one, it triggers 6 more from new blocks falling. Really makes me want to say 'screw it'. But cute game, beyond that.

@FateIsEscaped: Actually, the best strategy IS to let the boss get purple/grey combos. After you've set up perfect shield and counter, so that the boss kills himself with said combo.

Pretty much cruised through the game until the octopos, but now I've lost more battles in a row against him than I have against everyone else in the entire game up to this point. Don't feel much incentive to keep at it until I get the lucky win it seems to need. Like the game, but it needs rebalancing.

Strategy guide: Pass your turn (by waiting) unless you can get 1) a 4+ clear or 3+3 of the same color 2) an attack/rage 3) a counter/defense/heal/energy that does not open you up for getting attacked. Also, don't take the last valid move; a fresh grid is very helpful. I beat the game with just 67% upgrades this way.

Boils down to how lucky you are.
Beat the boss at second try because I had more 4-rows and counters than he had heals...

The boss becomes super easy if you make sure you leave no attack moves for him to use, for he'll always go for attack first. Always go for 4x combo. Collect rage when it won't leave you open to getting attacked on the bosses turn. Don't bother with healing (unless it's a 4x combo), it heals far too little to counter the damage taken at this point. Let the timer run out when; you can't shield and counter (prioritizing shield if you have a choice between the two and can't do both), or you can't attack, this leaves the boss with crappy tiles and in the position to shuffle the board pieces around for your turn.

The Reshuffles are ALWAYS in the final boss' favor. I had whittled his final form down to fifteen health, had full health, and he got EIGHTEEN ATTACKS AND NINE SPECIAL ATTACKS IN ONE TURN.

Rage is counterable, you don't always receive the heals you should from gems, there is WAY too much luck involved and the time factor is BS.

Please kongregate, resolve this, because I've been playing this like 1000s times, for months.

If you want to grind for high score, take Pixel and max out everything defensive. Hold your money back and do not buy anything that increases damage. This ensures the enemy lives long enough for you to hyper mega ultimate point combo.

If you want to play a game that you feel like is rigged or your opponent is cheating then this is the game for you. The board is stacked against you, and the 1 or 2 options you have set up the computer for their unbelievable plays.

I just pulled off the greatest thing ever in this game. Got a big bang with defense, giving me 100% mitigation, then used the singularity to break all of the counter squares, giving me over 400% damage reflect, in the process tipping my rage mater over the limit, and fully recharging my health and energy. Then the poor AI decided it wanted to use its rage attack, sorry big guy, but you do nothing, and I hit you for over 600 and win.

By the way, the enemy AI ignores all 4-of-a-kind and 5-of-a-kind unless there is no 3-match of attack tiles for it to match (physical or special). You can use that to your advantage. Enemy usually matches life tiles and ignores all others when low on health.

Best way to beat boss is always try and take the attack/special attack bonus if there is one available, so that the squid can't attack you. Save defense and counter when there is more than one attack/special attack available, and just tank the damage.

Guys, trust me, even the last boss isn't too bad. (he is the hardest, of course, but totally beatable) Basic idea is to never let the enemy get purple or grey combos. Even if you have to give up your current turn to do it. You just have to be able to read the gems, and see what consequences your combo will have. Also since the gems at the top of the screen are random, it's usually best to do a horizontal 3 combo, rather than a vertical combo, if you have the choice. Another tip is, if there are 2 purple combos to get, instead of you getting 1, try to get a defense or counter combo. The AI will always go for a purple gem combo. By using a defense/counter combo you lessen the total effect of his combo. Another tip is, you can leave your character on a fight, go browse some stuff, and come back to free gems. (each higher boss gives more gems/does more damage)

I've actually really loved this game, despite the fact that I don't play it as much as I might. I'm actually a little surprised at people's issues... I beat the octopus my first try, with Pixel, who people say is the hardest to play.
To be fair, a lot of this game is luck. But I've found that you can really tip it in your direction with the right upgrades- defense and counter can actually be more useful that health or attack upgrades. Maxed defense is 100%, and maxing out counter can get you up to 146% (at least, that's the number I remember).

The final boss counts too much on luck. Basically, I can grind until I get the right combination of drops, or just get on with my life.

Great game and all. It has an interesting take on match-3 puzzle games. But, please explain the purpose of adding a timer.

The octopus powering up shouldn't cancel out my move if it's still in progress, especially since you can't control the order of what tiles are activated (i.e. it attacked him first, causing him to power up, before activating shield and counter, so I died on his first attack).

TIP FOR HARD CHALLENGE Pick RYU(dog) Max out till you get to the boss and every turn try to block if you can and use counter as a backup. Together they are unstoppable....also IF THERE ARE NO ATTACKS AVAILABLE SKIP YOUR TURN BY LETTING THE TIMER RUN OUT!!!! +++IF U AGREE!!!

Am I the only one who thinks the characters from this game seriously look like they belong in a nickelodian series? The music, the animation, all of it, it's just too catchy, I really wish I could see them in some sort've animated series.

If you're having problems with the final boss: Max out your defense/counters, and aim for getting Defense icons above all else. 100% damage block will be useful, and as long as you're matching vertical blue shields you should be making chain reactions that will give you attacks, counter bonuses, and fill your rage. If you can't match blue shields, match any attack gems that your opponent could use, but pick the HORIZONTAL ones so that no surprise gems fall down and line up a different set of attack gems. Control the board, and it shouldn't be too hard. Good luck!
