Because I am a new player, I actually played 'Book of Mages: The Dark Times before The Chaotic Period. Frankly, The Dark Times is a whole lot more fun!

Played this game 6-7 years ago back when i was in highschool. If i remember correctly this game was one of the best flash games i have played along with the Sony series. Came back to comment after I just replayed Book of Mages 2 to spread the awesomeness!!

Ultimate guide:
Pick Ice Water
Don't bother with Arena
Max: High Attack (ass soon as possible to beat Clan Leader 1s time as he has 6) an Low defence
When both maxed max Mana burn
During fights just do Mana burn and block(low)/parry(high) attacks untill opponent has 0 mana than make high attack, burn mana and repeat high attack.
When mana burn maxed (3) max Low attack
Don't bother with High defence just train more and more mana in Mana cave
Still use previouse tactic unless learning Freeze 2.
Change tactic by useing Freeze 2 as soon as possible than Low attack and repeat 2nd time.
Beat High mages (those with ranks).
Train mana and make all quests untill you will win whole game.
P.S. Tactic with burinng mana can be bad for mana burning opponents and than you will just have to find way to make max dmg to them.

Something that gets me is if I'm trying to become number 1 in the book of mages, and I have to fight my clan leader, I can't if I'm the leader. AM i supposed to have already beaten my leader or loose the election if i haven't?

Not going to lie. Had I played this game before I played the sequel, I would've never given the sequel time of day. This game is pretty horrid. To think that a single low shield can deflect two low attacks. It makes the whole mechanic of leveling up attacks or shields useless. You burn up more mana trying to deal damage with a level 2+ attack when a level 1 shield deflects all damage at nowhere near the cost of the attack. This game is literally a contest to see if you can drain the enemies mana before they can kill you.

Have won with Red Fire and Ice Water, wondering if its possible to win as any other clan? Ice Clan Leader and Red Clan Leader are difficult, even as a member of those clans, are they possible to beat as, say, Sea water?

Can the game be beaten with the poison character? I did whatever I could, but it did not work. His attacks are too strong for the attack or defense, and twice makes it even worse. There is not enough time to drain his mana or kill him with poison. Is it possible?

game, so this is the beginning, and, yes, not as great as The Dark Times, but still pretty good.

@esran, yes, but you kinda have to cut it close.. my strategy is to keep burning mana and countering his low attacks (you'll lose 20 hp every time, though) until you can use your defense sheild, then you continue burning mana/countering low attacks until you can use silence, and then silence him and get a high attack on him, then burn his mana. silence again, then finish him off

@speedypants, this is the FIRST Book of Mages game, so this is the beginning, and, yes, not as great as The Dark Times, but still pretty good.

I was the clan leader of chaos fire and failed to win in the great mage election. Then the clan leader of chaos fire became great mage. hehehehe

hm, seems to be impossible to beat the red fire clan leader as a dark fire mage with his huge mana pool and 6hd, 6la. Good thing I didn't have to fight him at the Grandmage election, as he was somehow impressed with my amount of Mana

And then...goes on to the GREAT MAGE election where "The Clan Leader of Red Fire Clan" speaks out having no objection to me being the great mage. Didn't I just beat this guy in my own clan's arena to become the Clan Leader of Red Fire Clan. Why am I talking to myself saying I have no objection to being the great mage? This part of the dialogue needs a check to see if the player is already a clan leader and delete the text. It doesn't make sense.

Tavern Master: Good Evening, Wilson. Rank 5 mage is the Clan Leader of Red Fire Clan, you can find him in the Great Hall of Red Fire Clan. [character is Rank 6, goes to Great Hall] Who do you want to talk to? Clan Leader: You are Clan Leader now. SO I'M FOREVER STUCK AT RANK 6.

The timeline for historical events are too rigid. In order to succeed in say, the Apprentice Challenge, you basically need to train 2 mana burn, 2 low defense, and 2 high defense....leaving only 1 in attack. This goes for any clan since the specials don't kick in and you're so limited on time that you can't train anything else. Not much RPG to it in order to success...you're pretty much set one path in order to beat the game.

I love playing Poison Water. It is one of the harder mages to play, because you have to know which spells each clan is bad at and use it to your advantage.

Actually, for me, it was always easy to defeat Red Clan mages (as Ice Clan). Just use low defend, they'll low attack, then use low attack, and you'll get one hit. If you keep using that, you eventually will get enough special points for freeze 2, and then you'll get 5-6 free hits on them.

In my opinion, Red Fire is the most overpowered of any clan. After you fully upgrade everything, start challenging the mages in every clan. Don't use special 4, use special 7. Use mana drain every turn, and if they rest, use low attack. Use high defend for high attacks, and use low attack for low attacks. Become the Clan Leader, and then challenge High Mages as soon as you are in the Book You will get to rank 13. Use these tactics on the Great Mage challengers, and you will win!

After playing it thoroughly, I have to say it is actually terribly designed. I am in the chaos clan now, 3rd opponent of the apprentice mage contest. If I attack with high attack magic, I do 10 damage on him. Then he goes by attacking with log attack, which takes away 20 of my health. So after that I switch strategies, and start mana burning him. It doesn't matter it only takes away 5 mana. He instead goes to attack with high attack, which I have higher and I take him away 10 HP. Repeat till dead. Terribly designed combat system, you just have to learn how to exploit each and every single opponent, but because you have no saves, it is really annoying to do.

Let's see... Me (Leader of Chaos Fire Clan): Nooo! I lost the election!
Some grand mage: The Chaos clan leader has won!
Book: Wilson was defeated and the Chaos clan leader won the election.
Wait what?

I never became evil, for the simple reason that it was more boring to assassinate the great mage. yeah, thats really the only reason. otherwise i'd be a Gold Roger
