Page 8, "Hello World" slide.
I had a problem with running the code. Errors it gave me
"Call to a possibly undefined method TextField"
I had to put at the top, with the other imports
"import flash.text.TextField;"
and it started working
I knew what imports are and how they work, but someone new to ActionScript might be confused by it

Ok so I think I'm missing a download... The graphics example code on page 14 brings up nothing on my Flash player. Is this a common problem or do I need to do some troubleshooting?

Oddly enough, I couldn't get the image to work. Then I found out something interesting: in the project manager, you need to have sources indexed BEFORE the main.as. I assume this is something to do with read order? or did I screw something up?

I don't think I'm cut out for this... 2 hours on this freaking program and I can't get adobe to make a stinking "Hello World!" output file. There has to be a user friendly flash game developing program in existence!

On Step 8, my Hello World compiled without a hitch. Should I be celebrating, or should I be terrified? I worry because I might be missing an important lesson here.

Yay, a good tutorial that is easy to follow! :D I've been trying to use this program for a little while and now I'm finally getting some movement.

Thanks for adding this. It's very helpful. I tried looking up tutorials for a "Hello World" tut all day and then found this on kong and was very pleased with how much this helped. 5/5. You should do a Moving text tut, or text at coordinates tut.

Just a heads up, the latest version of FlashDevelop comes with Flex SDK built-in, so you don't need to download it separately.

Thanks for posting this, I've done some (very little) programming before, but not anything outside of FORTRAN, it's been a help

I get
Error: a target file must be specified
Use 'mxmlc -help' for more information about using the command line
Build halted with errors (fcsh).
Any ideas?

thank you very much, I was struggling to figure out how to create a file I wasnt sure what kind of project I needed to start because the tutorial that comes with the program is very confusing.

To fix the I/O error do the following. Tools-Program Settings-FlashViewer(Plugin)-External Player Path-Flex\runtimes\player\10.1\%Your OS%\Flash Player Debugger

Also when I go on with embedding the image, it says something like public can only be used inside a package, but when I use package, it says package cannot be nested. Anyone?

Question: When I use the command package, I get an error, but when I use opaqueBackground (it shows up during typing) it works. Anyone know why?
