I like it, and while there are upgrades, there aren't enough to really compete with the escalation. And the money is limiting. I can't seem to make enough to even survive enough without taking a massive loan.
Way too complicated. The moving screen makes it even more difficult. Would be better if actions were automatic such as not having to move people around and change armor. Way too complicated of a gameplay system.
Thanks for the info Zocky, maybe put it in the game description/instructions though :)
And I think the flood thing is broken too because I have never seen a flood yet :D I literally have lost zero from floods everytime I play (I'm getting the hang of it now). And I'm not sure irrigation helps unless you're at high populations, at which point it is almost unnecessary. It seems to do nothing at lower levels. But I could be wrong. Also, flood damage doesn't seem to protect from disastrous or bad weather, those are still killer.
Upgrades are now described in the description, and the flood system is changed - your yield in disastrous years is now two, but half of the crop is destroyed by floods, until you upgrade.
After further testing, I think random event calculation is off. Disastrous/Bad years happen ~5 times more frequently than anything. Plagues happen way too frequently and as far as I can tell, there's no way to prevent them. I lost 70% of my pop. in 4 years time due to TWO separate plagues. Upgrades would help, except I never seem to afford them, which makes it impossibly difficult in the beginning. When I can afford one, they don't seem to make much of a difference. Plus I can't predict from year to year what will happen (when farming and food depended on weather conditions, they predicted quite well being skilled at reading conditions leading up to a farming season), I can't formulate a strategy as I have no idea what is going to happen from one year to the next. Add in that disastrous/bad years seem to happen more frequently it really appear to make the game impossible. Which sucks, I want to get into the game and explore it more. But I can't seem to get anywhere.
It seems like for every single good year, I get 5-10 bad years. And for every beautiful year, I get 5 disastrous years. And then, BAM. Plague. Maybe have a population boon, or a immigration influx to counter act them. Other wise, it just seems like the whole game is built to make you lose. I have tried all sorts of strategies, and no matter what I do, I lose. The longest I made it was 30-40 years, and I lost because of 7 bad years in a row, followed by 4 disastrous ones. I think I had 1 or 2 good years that year. But without being able to predict when those are going to occur (short of the plagues in other places which you can't really avoid), it's all just luck and not much of a strategy game.
I think a clearer explanation would help. Right now all I can figure out is that if I change the settings, numbers change. But no matter what I do, I end up losing. The only way to get bushels for buying is to sell my land, but I never seem to be able to buy it back. Eventually I get to zero land, and even though I have the bushels for it, I can't buy land.
Maybe I'm doing something wrong, but it seems like the only way to make any money is to just sell land. I don't seem to store enough food to ever buy anything.
