Maybe I'm missing something (or maybe everybody else is), but I didn't think the storyline was "cute." I thought it was interesting and engaging, but not really cute. Seemed kind of dark to me, actually. Great game either way. 4/5 (just wish it was a bit longer).
As has already been mentioned several times, there seem to be a lot of bugs which prevent this game from being really enjoyable. For me, the game froze up when my mouse wandered off the game window. Good luck getting the game into shape - seems like it'll be fun when it's not so buggy.
Almost couldn't make it through another forced-march ad for Royal Carribean's/Jenny McCarthy's romantic comedy adventure to experience the game. Gag. Who do they think their target audience is anyway?
Anyway, the game is pretty fun if a bit repetitious after a while. The gameplay is somewhat lackluster, but as is the case with many games, the stats and upgrades keep it interesting. 3/5.
Fun game, but it's freezing after each level I beat. Not sure if this is a Flash problem or a game bug, but either way it makes the game unplayable for me. :(
I agree that pausing at the beginning of rounds would be welcome. I like the watering-to-level-up feature, too, but it would be nice if plants came into the game with at least a minimum readiness to fight.
@ David4242: Congratulations for noticing the superficial similarity between this game and Plants and Zombies. Doesn't make it a rip-off, though. Anyway, I'm sure the developer will sorely miss your business...oh, wait, that's right - it's a free game. Quit crying.
Smooth gameplay and greate controls. Plus, it was nice to play a game where ammo and health were both found in abundance. Normally I don't like flash shooters, but this one was well done.
And unless I'm mistaken, you don't get XP for everything you kill? Only for those that drop it (and which you subsequently pick up)? Also, enemies have too much armor/HP or initial weapon is just too weak. Even the weakest enemies take significant sustained damage before they are destroyed. Despite all of this, the game is surprisingly fun, but it really feels that everything is stacked against you from the very beginning.
I agree with others here - the first stage is entirely too hard. I'm on my 7th try already and there's no sign of much progress beyond that anytime soon. I think the damage is just too high with no real way to dodge projectiles early on. The first few upgrades don't seem to help a whole lot, either. The first level difficulty is really perplexing since the game is so polished looking and fun otherwise. :/
Great concept, and I really like the controls. The only real problem I've experienced so far is that the character and his shadow image are slightly out of sync. My character always seems to reach obstacles a few pixels before the shadow does and the shadow always needs an extra "bump" to get him to jump through portals after the main character has already been through his. Fairly minor issue though in an otherwise great game!
Looks like it's all been said already...what it amounts to is too little money. I've tried lots of different strategies (buying more mines upfront, stacking archers in different arrays, etc.), but they all seem to end up the same way - spending every cent you have after every wave to barely keep the enemy at bay. It always feels like you're outmanned and about to be overrun (not in a fun way), and if you don't buy upgrades early on, you'll never get them. I do like the more open feel of this defense game, though.
Man, I really like the puzzles in this game. I think they far outweigh the slightly unpolished graphics. However, I'm afraid that many people won't give the game much of a chance past the first couple of levels because it does seem tedious at first. It gets much better after about level 3. Great job!
At the risk of getting downrated into oblivion, I have to agree with Socran. The screen scrolling is quite jerky. Not sure what's causing this. Also, while I don't think the controls are "horrendous," they're not the best, either. This is most evident while climbing walls (especially around corners). All of that being said, I actually really like the game. I enjoy these Metroid-style adventure platformers and this one is a pretty good example of the genre.
