I think you should have a death animation, like a quick explosion.
I had an issue where my ship kept moving in one direction, not sure if games fault, fixed after I got hit.
Maybe at the end screen remove the ui and have it say "Your ship was destroyed!" and under that "Final score" Then in big letters underneath

I like the concept. and the controls are fine.
Howabout you put in some sort of system that allows maybe a ship customization or at least some sunglasses for the ship after you reach a certain score, little things like that.
