A good strategy used often in the walkthrough is to start from the end of the map and move toward the front. Level up your soldiers as you go, or they won't get enough exp later on.

I have tried for years to get the Road Scholar badge for this game, and eventually all badges, but it is just such a dull and slow game that it has been four years and I have still not completed this goal. It boggled my mind back in 2009 how this game was so highly rated to be considered one of the best of 2008, and even today I still can not see any real redeeming factors to this game. Lack of hotkeys, lack of speed up, lack of unique skills to upgrade, poor music, poor map designs and map view. Overall a very poorly planned and designed game with sub-par execution and lackluster game play. 1 star seems overrated for this game

To all you super geniuses who are "recently" posting suggestions.... this game is 5 years old (Feb 2008), the first of a long series... if you want a far better version jump up a few years in development and pick a newer version....

Only 2 Stars for this game. It's not particularly nice to look at, but poor aesthetics can normally be wavered in a case with good game play... which unfortunately this game does not provide. Nothing new is brought to the Tower Defence table.

Although i'm a bit late, i have to say this is by far the worst tower defense game i've ever played, and went through 5 painful maps just for the badge.
Waves are SLOW, you don't know what enemies will come next, the game freezes for a split second every time your "towers" kill an enemy (which is annoying).
It took me one hour to get the badge. Not because it required planning or skills, just because i had to wait for 3/4 of that hour. I'm sorry, but this deserves the minimum possible i can rate.

Couldn't finish this game too soon. To slow and boring and old school for my liking. If it wasn't for the badge I was going for I never would have bothered to finish. Really glad I'm done!

I haven't played the sequels yet and maybe such a feature was added, but I think an "esteemed time" when you choose a mission would help. Too many tims I had to quit a mission because I had to go out.

Why is it that every time I kill an enemy the game suddenly freezes and then unfreezes repeatedly? Every single monster.

Long time player for defense games, but this game is a bit outdated for me. It's too slow. I think I'm a bit spoiled.

for 5 years ago, this game kicked ass. It did need a fast forward (w/bonus), and the progression pacing/reward was lacking, but still a well developed game.

I cannot believe such a game is in the BEST of anything.... Maybe best if it was from the previous milenium O.o Its just painful to play it... So slow progress, and idk if its only with me but each time my "towers" attack i get like 0.5 - 1 sec freeze every time.... If it wasnt for the badge Id never touch this...

Benefits
Beautiful concept. Careful game programming and strategy. Music is awesome. The author obviously took a great deal of care.
Concerns:
Game lags too much for the activity. That is a big problem, although it is slow to begin with. 2x speed and pause button would help.
HINTS TO WIN LEVELS WITHOUT LOSS
Advanced units such as Alchemist and Necromancer are under-powered AND over-priced. They add nothing to any map except impoverishing the bank.
Better to fill out the board and update all mages. KEEP ALL MAGES OF ONE KIND TOGETHER, as the specials do not stack. The only exception is the red fire mage, since it is a splash, not an infection.
This strategy is the only one I could find to beat the last Evil stronghold. Fooling with advanced units was a waste of time.
