I’d say check “If (new mine X-position = player X-position AND new mine Y-position = player Y-position)” and if its true, choose another location. As you said it, it wouldn´t place a mine in the players horizontal or vertical axis :)

Flash as it stands is a platform already above the 2-D capability of PS1, as little as it is used as such. Unity CAN be used on par with the Dream Engine (PS2), just that level of high-polygon animation is nearly impossible for small team, as high detail levels are well too time-consuming on few people to make as freeware.
