Previous researches (I can't be bothered to look up the sources, search for them yourself) have shown that players prefer high numbers to low numbers (i.e. 100 points when killing an enemy instead of 1). They also agree that games such as Mario or other classics would lose some of its appeal if two zeros were removed from the score. It's a matter of preference, I suppose. You prefer low numbers to high ones, people disagree with you, and that's okay.
