erm, yeah... I don't know what keeps happening, and I'm sure it's not my computer... but the all option of selection keeps sticking for some reason... not a faulty keyboard, I've changed it... maybe I'm hitting a specific key combo?

Badges are easier than you may think. Albeit the medium badge should be rated at a higher difficulty due to being time consuming. First of all, easy is easier than you may think as you can almost recruit all ten troops once you start (zoom through tutorial for resources). Upgrade all resource producers, this will allow you to upgrade the other buildings quicker. (This is assuming you are only aiming for the badges.) I would like to point out that you can have multiple buildings upgrading at the same time, so take advantage of this. Removing your protection can be good if done right, this will amplify your resource production. DO NOT START ON A SERVER WITH MANY TICKS, these servers may reset soon. One of the last badges I need for 2007 award. Lag in song and response time make this impossible to complete. If the music was synced better I might have a fleeting chance. A perfect at this rate is impossible... meh...
A realistic idea if you are running low on health and are on a shop level is to sell of all items except potions and shiny pretties (i.e. artifacts) As these items will go away when you go to the next floor, however the gold won't.
Another thing to note is spells, if you are holding the spell before combat, you can use it first thing, they can sometimes be better if you need that tiny bit of extra damage against a difficult enemy.
Third thing to note are the eyes, seemingly boring items, however if you have one like the eye of wealth, you can see what kind of item is in a chest by clicking on it and as such if you need gloves, you can be picky, likewise you can choose your enemies based on the amount of gold they have.
