Steffe, there is a way to still do it. Max out the patrol upgrade that lowers ship requirement to transcend levels. I have mine at 18 and it doesn't take long for me to find a boss that kill me moderately fast. Once you find a boss like that remove all weapons and repair beams and wait to die
Spend your first diamonds on product stand capacity because you have an early quest to sell 20 items, and if you don't have that upgrade you can't progress.
It seems that you can get so much more out of only spending tokens in damage and resource token upgrades. Everything else is way too costly with little reward. I would love to invest in AOE and ability reduction/duration but 10 points for 0.1% or 1% is just way too little. . . also the 1 token upgrades don't scale up (they always cost 1) so the investment in those just get better and better.
