Survival mode seems really luck-based.... the first time I got easy enemies and only died at 23 because I started getting archers but screwed up the blocking, and the second time I died at six because right at the start three demon swordsmen showed up...
a) Why the hell couldn't you tell us what any of the power-ups do? I'm always wasting money on buying a new kind of gun that I like less than the old one.
b) I know you're doing the retro thing with the graphics, but retro games had decent music. No need to make the sound ugly on purpose.
Ok, it turns out the secret of this game is to always do the hardest level available first. That way, you can get through the "hard" levels while they're still around 20-30% difficulty, and just be left with a bunch of tedious easy levels at the end. The only annoying part is grinding up enough cash by surrendering at the very last moment a few times to upgrade your armor and speed.
Wow, the last levels are insanely unfair. My spearman vs. their spearman, and theirs doesn't even slow down when murdering mine? I doubt I'd have that good of soldiers if I'd spent all my money just upgrading spear training.
I like this a lot more than the subsequent games made with this engine. The only thing I would change is that giving gold for enemy units killed punishes a player for winning quickly.
I liked the difficulty balancing. It took me a few tries, and it felt close a lot of the time, but I won before I got angry at it. Normal felt ok, hard felt hard, all is right with the world.
linkknil3: how can you not hate this? the music is annoying, the controls are bad, and every time you hit one of those up arrows, your fish disappears off screen.
I can honestly say that I hate this game. I very nearly quit out of boredom getting the easy badge. SOOOOOOOOOOOO SLOOOOOOOW. And I don't mean how it runs, I mean the pace of play.
To answer my own question from before, apparently getting hit counts against the "untouchable" achievement even if you had a shield.
...and now I have to die 28 more times on purpose? Poor choice of achievements. :(
Um, in level 1, I got to the top of the tower and fought all those guys who show up when I hit a switch. Now they're all dead, but I can't jump high enough to get anywhere?
Also, totally unfair squid boss: how the hell do I stun him with the exploding pods if they never appear closer than half a screen away from him? Weak.
