I believe it's stage 13 or so that I came across a game-breaking glitch. At that section with the two red bars separated by only one green block, I fell through the block and got stuck on the middle line, so I can't move.
Wow, that was awful. I forced myself to play until I got to the wizard, who was laughably easy even though I had it set on harf, and it was my first time playing. The game lacks all depth. It is a mockery of classic beat-em-up games. The gameplay is little more than mashing the same button, and there isn't even a combo system or anything of that nature. The level design is repetitive and boring, much like the rest of the game. It is an utterly uninspired game. The charm of the visuals bumps it up to a 2/5.
A great start. I love 2D beat-em-ups. It looks like most of this has been said already, but the combos system feels pretty limited, automatically leaving the screen prevents the snatching of some loot, the music gets boring after hearing the same thing over and over, there could be a better variety of enemies, the level design could use some work to make it feel a tad less monotonous, and the bosses are a little too predictable. But you do have all of the basics down. The engine is nice and fluid, the action is in-your-face, and the boss fights are epic. And is it just me, or do the hero and heroine look like Terry Bogard and Leona Heidern?
Cool idea, but there is absolutely nothing here that that makes me feel like it's even trying to keep me interested. It's just wave after wave of the same shit, without even progressing difficulty. This game is an absolute disgrace. I am usually a pretty fair rater, with 1s being steaming piles of shit, 3s being average, and 5s being absolute masterpieces. I'm sorry, but I have to go with a 1/5. I can't rate a game with absolutely no depth a higher rating than that. I know you can do much better than this.
This game is just overflowing with charm.
The concept is very simple, but it changes things up just enough to keep it interesting.
Nice work, and I hope the future chapters are even better.
The music is outstanding, the gameplay and controls are solid, it does give you a nice bit of plot, and it is all put together so damn well. Anyone who says that the graphics suck is an idiot. It is simply an oldschool, minimalistic visual style, and it suits the game very well. The art is very well-done, and does a great job of setting the mood for the game.
It is not a ripoff of Shift. The core mechanics are completely different, resulting in totally unique level designs. The games aren't similar at all.
I would much rather pay $15 for this than pay $60 for some high-tech game that I'd probably end up enjoying less than this anyway.
5/5
This developer earned my respect with Don't Look Back, and after playing VVVVV, it is strengthened.
Let's remind people that games are about the gameplay, not how high-tech the graphics are.
VVVVV is an example of true beauty.

icantstop, please don't be such an idiot. You obviously know nothing about the history of gaming if you think that something like this could have been made in the 60's. Pong wasn't made until 1972. The music is great if you have taste, it's not trying to be realistic, and I personally like having character development and plot in games.
