I was disappointed to discover that Solid Doom is NOT, in fact, solid. It's a faster-firing version of Doom Burst. Pretty good, but not as advertised on the tin. It's like expecting a steak and getting a hamburger.
Nice to see the game is once again allowing blops to accumulate. BTW, magitek2 is correct about darts and laser core for a key reason: Research can let your weapon break it's "weakness" bloon once per X shots. The interval for this doesn't change significantly between weapons, which means a faster-firing weapon will have more chances per second to break it's "weakness" bloon simply due to the sheer rate of fire... that X shots happens faster, allowing more "special" shots in a time frame. Darts and lasers fire quickly, and it doesn't take long for them to become a virtual STREAM of shots fired, so the "special" shots from Research happen quickly. Bloontonium Darts (for arms) and Focused Beams (for core) will bring those lead and glass bloons down FAST! Just don't forget Force Field Phasing and Big Bloon Sabotage! Blop Magnet is also important.
Happened again... had 2544 spendable blops, did 4-5 and gained another 2604... that 2604 did not get added to my 2544. Still at 2544. Game is tediously grindy and obviously broken. That's time I won't get back. 1/5
Beat the game several days ago. Just played 2-5, got ZERO blops. Collected TONS of blue blops... I usually get about 1.5k to spend running through 2-5... but this time finished the level with ZERO for no discernible reason.
I keep getting "Black magic has severed our communication! Please reload." I've gotten it four times this afternoon. What fun is a game that keeps dropping the connection?
You're not going to beat the 3-5 boss until you've done some serious upgrading. I didn't beat him till I had two spikey shots, doom burst and research in sharp darts (12/12), bloontonium darts (6/12), big bloon sabotage (6/12) and force field phasing (6/12). It's a lot of work.
I'mmmmm confused again. Triple Shot darts on both hands, Doom Burst core weapon, Research is 12/12 Sharp Darts, 6/12 Bloontonium Darts, 4/12 Big Bloon Sabotage, 3/12 Force Field Phasing, and yet I seem completely unable to beat the third boss. Is there a trick to killing his little push-bloon buddies, or am I just supposed to deal a ton of damage whenever I have the chance? Because... well... it LOOKS like I should be able to do a ton of damage. Is the game just over-tuned and over-grind-focused?
I don't quite understand Research. Do I need to "equip" the effects after I buy them? Do I need to use Bomb arm weapons to get the effect of Heavy Ordnance and Phosphorous Bombs, or do all research effects fire every x shots? Am I putting money into them just to increase the fire rate? Do they gain additional research points somehow or only when I spend money? Etc etc.
The best overall arrangement, IMO, is four flags and the best cannon. Work on FLAGS, not GUNS, starting with the best flag you can afford, as you go. However, I do find it easier to get past the third boss (the two-part fight) the first time by selling my weakest flag and buying the best gun I can afford instead.
Disappointing and frustrating. Later in the game, walls can kill you for no reason. It's like gears are embedded in them where you can't see or something. Progress is slow and tedious, gameplay is unimaginative, there's no replay value and it's easy to spend a lot of time broke due to unexpected, unavoidable deaths. I'll give it a 2/5 for the graphics and mildly NES-nostalgic music.
The game is TERRIBLY imbalanced. If you need proof, try beating a later level using only one type (Gunner, Agent, Bombard). The Bombard's ability to hit groups or even whole floors of enemies gives them a DISTINCT advantage in a swarm-oriented game. The power of both Gunners and Agents needs a considerable boost. And yes, I did think to go back and reset my upgrades... Gunners and Agents are still pathetic. As for the intro, the problem is that it's long and NOISY... if you go into the game and turn off the sound, it really should remember that and mute the intro the next time you return. I'm giving the game a 1/5 for it's intro, severe balancing issues (cmon, guy... playtest your game!) and blatant ripoffery. Send me a message if you rebalance it, FireBeast... it's not far from a 3/5 or even 4/5!
I grew up in the NES era, where translations both in-game and in the instruction manuals were terrible as a rule... and the English in this game STILL gives me a headache!
By the way, save terminals can be used to teleport around. Open a save terminal, then click on the location you want to travel to. Naturally, you can only travel to other terminals you've already found... but it really helps in getting around. The gold cost for the teleport is listed.
Not a bad game, not a great game. It has issues, such as teammates being unable to take over if the commander dies, the jeep leaving your team in an untenable position sometimes, and teammates having poor target priority (helicopter over crate, soldiers!). I'll be nice and give it 3/5.
